SPECIAL ALERT!!

*******SUMMIT POLICE DEPARTMENT BULLETIN*******

*WARNING**WARNING**WARNING**WARNING**WARNING*

Recently, there have been more attempted thefts, “Gypsy scams, in the Village of Summit.  During these thefts, a person will come to the house unannounced and claim that they need to get into the house some reason. Examples of reason are: there is a water leak in the area and the drinking water is contaminated, there is a gas leak in the area and the pipes in the basement need to be checked, or there was work done on the house outside to distract the homeowner, or trees outside need trimming.

The offenders  main victims are the elderly.  While the victim is distracted by the first person , one or more people will enter the residence and search for money or other valuables.  All “Gypsies” will then leave the residence.  Most times the “Gypsies” do not use violence to make entry into the residence, but no chances should be taken.  These people work in teams of two or more.

What can you do?

If someone comes to your home that you do not know, or have not called, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!   Call the police immediately, 9-1-1.  The police will respond immediately and will interview the subject and make sure they are at your residence for a legitimate purpose. Once again,

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!

Also, if anyone claims to be from the Village of Summit or any Utility company, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR and request to see identification.
