2010 Holiday CrackdownDecember 17 – January 2, 2011The annual Illinois Holiday Crackdown is a statewide enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving and unbuckled motorists.
Key Messages: Impaired driving is a deadly crime prevalent throughout America and is especially common among young males 21 to 34 years old. To crack down on alcohol-impaired driving, police in Illinois will be out in force from December 17 through January 2. To counter the overwhelming number of fatalities occurring during late night hours on Illinois roadways, law enforcement in Illinois is putting particular emphasis on late-night hours — particularly, impaired driving and safety belt enforcement. Data shows a very disproportionate number of motor vehicle fatalities on Illinois roads occur late at night, and a very high percentage of these fatalities involve alcohol and motorists who have failed to buckle up. In Illinois, approximately $1 million will be spent on additional enforcement patrols this holiday season. Illinois Statistics: In 2009, during the Christmas holiday timeframe, (crashes occurring from 6 pm on December 24 through 11:59 am on December 27), four people died in motor vehicle crashes. One of those deaths was in a crash that involved an impaired driver. In addition, 775 people were injured in crashes during this time. In 2009, during the New Year’s holiday timeframe, (crashes occurring from 6 pm on December 31 through 11:59 am on January 3), six people died in motor vehicle crashes. Three of those deaths involved an impaired driver and 477 people were injured in crashes during this time.

SUMMIT POLICE THANKSGIVING TRAFFIC SAFETY PROGRAM The Summit Police will be participating in the STEP traffic program during the weeks around Thanksgiving. This program designed by IDOT’s Division of Traffic Safety to increase safety during the holiday travel season will focus on drunk driving and other reckless driving behaviors, and safety belt use for adults and especially for children. The Summit Police will be adding extra patrols every night between November 12 and November 28 and conducting 4 Roadside Safety Belt Checks on random days during the Thanksgiving holiday week as part of the state wide program. By partnering with IDOT in this initiative we hope to increase safety belt use, and make Summit residents and roadways safer during the Thanksgiving holiday. |

On March 4th 2009 The Summit Police and Argo Community High School held a railroad safety day. More than 900 students had the opportunity to talk to officers about the dangers of driving and walking near tracks and trains. The kids saw two safety videos, and received hand-outs from Operation Lifesaver’s railroad safety program. Getting information in the hands of our young drivers will help them make better safer choices. The program was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Commerce Commission. The I.C.C. is working with the Federal Railroad Administration to keep drivers, pedestrians, and railway workers safe. We are glad to have been able to bring this program to our community.
