Press Release 07/1/2010

Summit Police Department has entered into an agreement with DOCVIEW, LLC to place traffic accident reports On-Line. The Docview.us.com Accident Report System was selected to serve as our traffic accident insurance and citizen request technology. What is Docview.us.com?  It is an Internet based application that was developed to help law enforcement agencies and insurance companies manage and access traffic accident reports in a more efficient manner. Through the use of innovative online document management technology, you are now able to rapidly find and view an accident report usually within 24 hours of being scanned. No more waiting in line or mailing report request forms. Now you can access your reports over the Internet, 24 hours a day!

Like most law enforcement agencies across America, the Summit Police Department has been pursuing an alternative to the hardcopy reporting, storing, and servicing of report requests. Summit Police Department concluded that the Docview.us.com system was the most suitable and secure solution as a local accident repository for insurance and citizen report requests.  Summit Police Department wanted a system that was designed to do the following:

*     Allow for multi-jurisdictional data sharing and searching

*     A comprehensive system to facilitate web accessible availability of accident reports for
insurance companies, officers and citizens

*     Remove the police department from the billing and request fulfillment process

*     Provide officers and investigators access to accident information for all agencies on the system.

We expect Internet viewing and printing will significantly reduce the time spent dealing with insurance agencies and citizens seeking copies of traffic crashes. Police Chief Les Peterson noted: "It is our desire to provide a level of expediency to anyone wishing to view and print police reports in the convenience of their home or business". The Summit Police Records unit files nearly 500 traffic crash reports yearly. Normally each crash report will contain two drivers. This means 1000 individuals and or insurance companies request copies of reports.

Wait times at the Police Records unit can reach 10 minutes for visitors wishing to purchase a report copy. This new on-line method will provide an alternative and more expedient method for obtaining the information they need.

*     Reports are available from work or home, 24 hours a day via the

Internet.

*     Saves citizens the hassles of driving downtown, paying to park, and standing in line.

*     Reports are converted to PDF format making them easy to view, save, print and email.

*     Finding a report takes only a few seconds.

*     Reports are accessible usually within 24 hours of being scanned, excluding holidays and weekends.

*     Reports cannot be modified, maintaining report integrity.

*     Clear, high resolution images of each report for optimal viewing and printing.

Docview.us.com provided our Police Department with a high speed scanner, scanning software and training at no charge. Docview.us.com charges a nominal convenience fee for this service which is added to the cost of the report.  Citizens who do not wish to pay the convenience fee can still come to the police station and pay the normal report fee if they wish. Visit www.docview.us.com to learn more about Docview and it's services.

The Village of Summit receives a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission to reduce youth access to tobacco

The Village of Summit has been chosen by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission to receive a grant in the amount of $2,400.00 to establish a comprehensive educational and enforcement program addressing minimum-age tobacco laws.

“We are pleased to receive this grant to enhance our efforts to reduce youth access to tobacco products. The health of the children in our community is very important,” said Les Peterson, Chief of Police.

The Commission, the state’s lead agency in developing strategies to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors, annually awards $1 million in grants to communities that are willing to implement its Tobacco Enforcement Program. Participating communities are required to provide retail education to its retailers prior to implementing the enforcement component. All tobacco retailers will receive the Commission’s Tobacco Retailer Kit which includes a review of state minimum-age tobacco laws, required signage and training guides for their personnel. In addition, each tobacco retailer will receive three compliance checks. Tobacco retailers within the entire program currently average over 90 percent compliance and Illinois is ranked 7th nationwide in Synar tobacco retailer compliance rates.

Press Release 03/12/2009

On March 4th 2009 The Summit Police and Argo Community High School held a railroad safety day. More than 900 students had the opportunity to talk to officers about the dangers of driving and walking near tracks and trains. The kids saw two safety videos, and received hand-outs from Operation Lifesaver’s railroad safety program. Getting information in the hands of our young drivers will help them make better safer choices. The program was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Commerce Commission. The I.C.C. is working with the Federal Railroad Administration to keep drivers, pedestrians, and railway workers safe. We are glad to have been able to bring this program to our community.

For more information on Operation Lifesaver please see there web site at WWW.OLI.Org

The Village of Summit has been chosen to participate in the Public Education and Enforcement Research Study (PEERS) program.  The Federal Railroad Administration and the Ill. Commerce Commission sponsored program to instill safe driving and walking habits when around tracks or trains.

The Village of Summit will receive an $11,500 grant from the Illinois Commerce Commission to institute a new traffic/railroad safety program in 2009. The Summit police program will be comprised of 3 parts, extra traffic patrols around railroad crossings and bridges, increased security on railroad property to deter trespassing, vandalism, and theft, and education for young drivers on the danger of close encounters with trains.

The education program will comprise portions of the "Operation Lifesaver" railroad safety program. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit, international continuing public education program first established in 1972 to end collisions, deaths and injuries at places where roadways cross train tracks, and on railroad rights-of-way. For more information on Operation Lifesaver go to their web site at WWW.OLI.ORG

The enforcement portion of the program will begin in February and continue until December 2009.
